„The Shape of Water” a obţinut 13 nominalizări la premiile Oscar, în timp ce „Dunkirk” a primit opt, iar „Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” a primit şapte nominalizări. Greta Gerwig a devenit a cincea femeie nominalizată la premiul Oscar pentru cea mai bună regie, în timp ce directorul de imagine al filmului “Mudbound”, Rachel Morrison, este prima femeie nominalizată la trofeul pentru cea mai bună imagine.

Membri ai academiei din cele 17 secţii tehnice şi artistice stabilesc listele de nominalizări pentru fiecare categorie, cu excepţia lungmetrajelor animate şi a lungmetrajelor străine, decise de comitete mixte. De asemenea, nominalizările pentru premiul Oscar pentru cel mai bun film sunt decise de toţi membrii eligibili să facă acest lucru. În perioada 20 februarie – 27 februarie, membrii activi ai Academiei de film americane votează câştigătorii pentru toate cele 24 de categorii.
